Peterson Cartridge Introduces the 338 Winchester Magnum

Pittsburgh, PA (March 13, 2026) – Peterson Cartridge Co. of Pittsburgh, PA announces the addition of 338 Winchester Magnum to its growing family of rifle casing calibers.

The 338 Winchester Magnum was introduced to the commercial market in 1958. It is still touted as a premier medium-bore cartridge that is highly effective for taking the largest North American animals and the dangerous game found roaming the African savanna.

Often referred to as the “Alaskan” caliber, it is a popular choice of backcountry guides and hunters who may need the stopping power it offers on the big bears. Its versatile range of bullet weights (200-250gr) make it a suitable option for everything from deer to elk, moose, or grizzly. And its standard-length action allows it to fit into lighter, more maneuverable rifles than the bigger long-action magnums.

“We are very happy and excited to be offering such a storied caliber,” says Derek Peterson, president of Peterson Cartridge. “Known for offering superior penetration, manageable recoil, and flat trajectories, the 338 Win Mag is a perfect addition to our lineup of western hunting calibers.”

Peterson adds, “The caliber is already considered to be highly accurate, especially when loaded with good handloads. The Peterson Cartridge 338 Win Mag casings are manufactured to further that reputation, offering consistent internal volumes, uniform wall thicknesses, and dependable performance from case to case.”

Peterson Cartridge 338 Win Mag brass will be offered in the standard length and the Peterson exclusive “Long” version, which reduces expansion upon firing and prolongs case life.
