Peterson Cartridge Introduces 270 and 300 WSM
 

Pittsburgh, PA (Feb. 6, 2026) - Peterson Cartridge Co. of Pittsburgh, PA announces the addition of the 270 Winchester Short Magnum and 300 Winchester Short Magnum to its growing family of rifle casing calibers.

"I'm starting this new product announcement off by apologizing," says Derek Peterson, President of Peterson Cartridge. "I'm apologizing for how long we took to come out with these new casings. If you are a long-time Peterson fan, you might remember we announced these calibers back in 2018 at that year's SHOT Show. Then, what we did, was get sidetracked with a bunch of other calibers. Over fifty of them, in fact."

"Time got away from us," continues Peterson, "and we never finished developing the tooling for the Short Magnum casings. But all of you were persistent, and you never let us forget that we said we were going to make them. To this day, the WSM's are still two of the most requestedcalibers we don't make. Until now."

The 270 Winchester Short Mag (WSM) is a high-velocity, short-action cartridge
designed for long-range, flat-shooting performance on medium-to-large big game like
elk, mule deer, and sheep. The 270 WSM is highly effective for hunting out to 400-500
yards. It is also designed to fit in shorter, lighter rifles, offering excellent long-range
trajectories and high energy retention, making it ideal for western mountain hunting.

The 300 Winchester Short Mag (WSM) is a high-performance, .30-caliber beltless
magnum cartridge designed for efficient, long-range big game hunting and, in some
cases, competitive shooting. It provides ballistics similar to the 300 Win Mag, capable
of taking elk, moose, and bear, but in a shorter, lighter, and more efficient rifle package
with slightly less recoil. The 300 WSM is highly effective for hunting at ranges
exceeding 500 yards and has been used for long-range shooting out to distances over
1,000 yards.
